Three Unique Hotels Made from Recycled Material

By Trish Smith |
Wouldn’t it be fun to stay in a hotel that was made from something different, like a recycled plane? Well, you actually can!

Even though traveling is fun, almost every hotel that you stay in has the same drab, boring appearance. They all have the same ugly paintings that hang on the same plain white walls. And of course, they’re all made from the same standard building material.

Wouldn’t it be fun to stay in a hotel that was made from something different, like a recycled plane? Well, you actually can! There are hotels popping up around the world that are made from unique recycled material. Here are three of these green hotels.

Recycled Drain Pipes

The Das Park Hotel in Austria is located in a public park along the Danube River. The hotel offers rooms made from large repurposed drain pipes.

The rooms include a double bed that comes with a sleeping bag and a wool blanket, as well as and some extra storage space for personal belongings. The bathrooms, along with a water fountain, a buffet and a bar, are all located right outside the drain pipes for public access.

Recycled Airplane

Located outside of the Teuge Airport in the Netherlands is an old Cold War-era German airplane that has been turned into a luxury hotel suite.

The plane is an Ilyushin 18 that was built in 1960. It used to transport members of the German Democratic Republic, but was later recycled into a restaurant. Now it’s a swanky one-room luxury hotel suite that comes with cool amenities such as 3 flat-screen televisions, an infrared sauna, a jacuzzi and free Wi-Fi.

Recycled Shipping Containers

In 2008 Travelodge opened a 120-room hotel made from 86 prefabricated shipping containers in Uxbridge, England. The shipping containers were bolted together and covered with plasterboard walls.

Verbis Systems, the company that designed the hotel, claimed that using the shipping containers created 70% less on-site waste.
