Sustainable or Vibrant? Which World Do You Want?

By Joe Laur |
Is sustainable all there is? If I asked you how your marriage was, and you said, "It’s sustainable," I’d have to say, "Gee, I’m sorry!"

The Breeze at Dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep
You must ask for what you really want. Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth over a doorsill where two worlds meet. The door is round and open. Don’t go back to sleep.
-Jaladin Rumi

I’ve never liked the word “sustainable”. The root word, sustain, means to support from underneath, to hold up. So it’s not a bad thing to be sustained. But as Peggy Lee asks in her classic love song, “Is That All There Is”?

Sustainable seems like a good place to start, but I don’t want to end up there. As designer Bill McDonough quips, “If I asked you how your marriage was, and you said, ‘Oh it’s sustainable’, I’d have to say, ‘Gee, I’m sorry!’”

I like the term vibrant. It comes from the same root as vibrate and means “pulsating with vigor and energy; vigorous; energetic; vital. Boy I’ll take that over sustainable any day.

A few quick trick questions for you (and this will go on your Permanent Record:

  • Do you want your love life to be:
    a) sustainable  b) vibrant?
  • Do you want your work to be:
    a) sustainable  b) vibrant?
  • Do you want your family life to be:
    a) sustainable  b) vibrant?
  • Do you want your health to be:
    a) sustainable  b) vibrant?
  • Do you want your planet to be:
    a) sustainable  b) vibrant?

If you answered (b) to most or all of the above, you may want to move “beyond sustainability” to vibrance. After all, the world right out that window is vibrant. Nature does not settle for sustainable. She is green, vibrant, nourishing, life-giving, fertile and hot! I’m a little in love, I admit, but my spouse is OK with this one.

So as Rumi advises, “ask for what you really want”. Let’s hear it for changing our ways, our systems and our lives to go all the way to vibrance. I can feel the vibrations already.
