Once in a while on sunny days, I get out of my dark, leather chaired, book lined study, and go play on the beach!
And when I do you can bet I look for the best recycled beach stuff I can find. It brings out the kid in me, so here are a few items to pack for your inner child as well as your real ones.
The main attractions at the beach are water sun and sand. Here’s a great little bucket and shovel from ChinaBerry for the kid in us all. Despite the name, these toys are made where most are sold- right here in North America. This saves fuel and waste CO2 emissions.
The entire set, shovel, rake, castle mold and bucket are made from recycled milk jugs. Energy, materials and landfill space are conserved. All safe and non toxic, this set will spend many years playing with you instead of resting in a landfill.
When you are ready to get off the sand and into the water, there’s this cool Dolphin Explorer Boat from Sprig Toys. Kid, not battery powered, this and other Sprig toys are molded from Sprigwood, a durable, child-safe material made from reclaimed wood and recycled plastic. They are paint free, so no worries, Mom. The Dolphin Explorer Boat comes with two boats, a captain, and mother and baby dolphins. It was named 2010 Specialty Toy of the Year, so there. Sprig is now part of WHAM-O, so look for Sprigwood Frisbees flying through your neighborhood soon.
The beach gets me hungry, so I pack a snack. Now the EPA estimates that one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year, and each one takes over 1,000 years to break down into tiny toxic petro polymers. Turtles eat ‘em like jellyfish and choke. Less than 1% of plastic bags are recycled. Don’t take ‘em to the beach! Use these reusable Sandwich and Snack Packs from ChinaBerry. They are 100% cotton, nylon lined (BPA-, lead-, and phthalate-free), and secured with Velcro. You can eliminate hundreds of plastic bags with just one of these. They can be machine-washed and dried, washed in the dishwasher, or for the longest life, simply wiped clean with a soapy sponge and air dried.
If you want a whole picnic on the beach, our friends at Preserve have a line of reusable cups, plates and flatware all made from recycled #5 polypropylene from Stonyfield yogurt containers. #5 is not often recycled and very safe, so Preserve gets a lot of kudos from me for up-cycling this safe durable material into new useful products instead of letting it get tossed.
All work and no play makes me depressed. And that’s no good to anyone. So let’s work to save the world, and then let’s go to the beach!
