You’ve heard the expression, "Two heads are better than one" Well what about 500,000 heads collaborating and sharing their best "green" business and technology ideas online?

Introducing GreenXchange - an online "one-click" space for companies to share their patents and intellectual property that moves the needle toward greater environmental health. Imagine if companies shared their good business ideas with each other about how to prosper the bottom line and the earth. Imagine being able to access an entire network of creative thinkers on sustainability issues with a mouse click? Instead of a handful of development folks inside my company, I can access thousands of bright minds across many companies, all sharing ideas- and licensing each other’s work. My good idea not only helps me, but earns revenues as others use it, and everyone- especially the planet- benefits.

Companies used to think (many still do) that the only way to win was through secrecy, competition at all costs, and trademarking everything. But digital efforts like Linux, Facebook, Wikipedia- showed that mass collaboration changes everything and usually improves the result. An open forum for sharing knowledge can be more successful than a cutthroat marketplace where all information is held close to the vest. Instead of everyone reinventing the wheel- or worse, the flat tire- knowledge is shared across the members. This is a huge shift in "mental models" - the world views that guide our behavior. As in nature- collaboration usually trumps competition.

The users of the GreenXchange will be companies with patents to share- technology related to sustainability that is more powerful if used by many companies. Companies looking for technologies to use will also benefit from other’s bright ideas. And researchers and entrepreneurs can use the ideas as well to further understanding or grow a new green business.

The GreenXchange has a great set of guiding principles:

Imagination is infinite. Resources aren’t. Act accordingly,
Design products to be used and reborn,
Everything has a use. Waste nothing,
Apply nothing to the product or process that harms,
Seek fossil fuel independence.
And they start with a set of obvious assumptions and compelling questions: All companies want sustainable innovation. All companies have dedicated time and resources to it. Every company has something to offer that others could benefit from.

What if we shared? What could that lead to? If we share a common purpose, sharing knowledge could create uncommon results.

Sounds a little like kindergarten wisdom. Share, Play well with others, work together. Seems like common sense. But common sense isn’t that common. GreenXchange is working to make it more so.
