I just watched something very interesting on CBS news. They have a recycle plant in Oregon that recycles 95% of ANY plastic by melting it down...even Styrofoam!

I keep a phone as long as I possibly can! My last three phones (so only NOT my first phone) have been "hand-me-ups" from my children or their spouses. When they upgrade, I sometimes get upgraded. I'm happy with a phone I'm used to much longer than they think I should be, hoping to keep me current. I'm a firm believer in keeping it simple! Learned from my depression-era parents: Use it up, wear it out, make it do -- or do without. The earth would be greener if most folks operated that way.

We change phones ONLY when there is no way of salvaging them. My husband loves his ten year old flip phone and I only have a smart phone because my son bought it and pays for the service. I was happy with my little Freedom Pop phone.
