Market Haul: Red Anjou Pears

Pears mark a sweet spot in the dead of winter.


Right now the Greenmarkets are heavy on vegetables and non-produce items such as hand-milled flour, baked goods, and organic meat — little fruit is in sight. But I was drawn to the stand of an orchard in upstate New York, who sweetened things up with red Anjou pears. Anjou pears are a refreshingly sweet snack on their own, but an adventurous eater might try to top a pizza with them. If they’re still too firm for your liking, let them ripen at room temperature for a few days. Their off-white flesh will become sweeter, softer, and smoother.

    I have 2 pear trees in my 5 acres and 2 apple trees. freeze ,dry and can them for use all year.We even sell the excess cheaply and the bad ones we save for the deer to eat .
