Market Haul: Pickles

There’s a good reason pickling became a big food trend.

A couple of years ago, the word “artisan pickles” became an offhand, slightly derisive reference to Brooklyn’s burgeoning artisan food scene. But hipsters and cultural commentary aside, artisan pickles and really, any pickled vegetable, are truly delicious. Tart and crisp, pickles brighten up a Cuban sandwich or egg salad sandwich. They team up well with salty olives, or are an easy snack on their own. Several Greenmarkets have different picklers, who especially stand out during winter when veggies of the unpickled variety are more scarce. Divine Brine, which has lately showed up at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket — located in Brooklyn, of course — has divine bread and butter pickles, available pre-packed or straight from the bucket.

    can pickle almost anything. can make a fast pickle to be used the same day. kids love my pickled eggs .so easy to pickle and so tasty!

    If properly cured no need to refrigerate thereby reducing need for refrigeration and being more sustainable/self sufficient.

    In grilled cheese sandwich! Or in peanut butter sandwich - super yummy!! Might sound gross at first but it really is awesome. Be daring, it's not like you're skydiving only eating a sandwich. =)
