Proper Green: Alternative Uses for Cupcake Liners

By |
Unsure what to do with all those extra cupcake liners? Here are some fun ideas.
Dear Proper Green,

I recently cleaned out my kitchen pantry and realized I have WAY too many cupcake liners, and rarely make cupcakes anymore anyway. It seems a shame to throw them away, but I can’t really donate them. Is there something else I can do with them?

Dear Amy,

The cupcake craze is winding down, and you’re definitely not the only one drowning in leftovers from those bulk cupcake liner purchases. Since there are all kinds of cupcake liners (paper, metallic paper, silicone; big, small, super mini), the most versatile answer is to find another use for them. Here are just 6 ideas:

  • Protect Your Drinks: With summer in full swing, outdoor parties are great! But, small leaves and bugs think so too. Use cupcakes liners on your drinks to act as a protector from these undesirable guests. To do this, flip the cupcake liner upside-down and place it on the top of the drink. Thread a straw through the liner and you have a perfect drink cover!
  • Decorate Jam Jars: Add some personality to your jams! Use your cupcake liners to decorate and label your jam jars or other similar containers. Place the liner on upside down and tie a ribbon or string around the top to keep the liner on.
  • Portion Control Snacks: Use your extra cupcake liners to create single-serving-size bites when hosting guests. Either for dessert and candy portions, condiments and dips, or veggies, these liners make great individual portion containers.
  • Light Up a Room: Cupcake liners and holiday lights, what a combination! Perfect as party decorations, make a small cut in the bottom of the cupcake liner and fit one over each light in the set. Hang them and turn on the lights! Various cupcake liner colors and a string of white lights are the perfect trick for changing party colors across the holidays.
  • Make a Popsicle Guard: Use cupcake liners to prevent a sticky situation. Slide a cupcake liner onto the popsicle stick and you have an instant save. With the summer heat, this is a great tip to enjoy your ice-cold snack without the mess.
  • Create a Cupcake Flower Bouquet: Use your favorite color cupcake liners and make an immortal bouquet. With a green wire or piping, string multiple cupcake liners in a row and push them up to create a flower. A similar trick can be used to create a topper for gifts.
